URBINO
The original capital of the Duchy of Montefeltro (35 km from Pesaro) extends
across the top of two hills. Its houses and churches are built down each hill
as far Porta Lavagine on the north-east slope and Porta Valbona to the south-west.
This is one of the major art towns in the world, both because of its history
and for the many buildings and works of art which are housed here.

FRASASSI
The formation of the Frasassi caves began about 1.400.000 years ago when the
Sentino river-bed was at an elevation of 200-300 mt higher than its present
position, as well as the water table. At this level the ground mineralized water
met the bicarbonate water of the river along the fault-planes and such a mixture
gave origin to the first halls, creating this wonderful natural fairy-world
that we can admire today.

SAN
LEO
Situated 35 kilometres from the sea, on the top of a sheer cliff above the undulating
plain to the right of the Marecchia Valley.
The first inhabitants were the Sabellian tribes from Umbria, followed by the
Gauls and the Romans. The ancient name of Montefeltro comes from the mass of
rock ( Mons Feretri ) on which the town was built and where, according
to tradition, there stood a temple dedicated to Jove Feretrius.

SAN
MARINO
Nestled between Romagna and Marche just a few kilometres
from the Adriatic riviera, the Republic of San Marino
covers an area of only 61 sq km. It was founded in
301 A.D. by a Dalmatian stonecutter called Marinus
who took refuge here – so the legend says – to escape
the persecutions of the emperor Diocletian. Since then,
the small country has boasted a history of freedom
and independence, always defended with determination
and wisdom against everyone.
