URBINO
The original capital of the Duchy of Montefeltro (35 km from Pesaro) extends across the top of two hills. Its houses and churches are built down each hill as far Porta Lavagine on the north-east slope and Porta Valbona to the south-west.
This is one of the major art towns in the world, both because of its history and for the many buildings and works of art which are housed here.

GRADARA
Gradara is a famous medieval village built on a panoramic promontory very near to the sea. Its castle is one of the most frequently visited in Italy. The fortress, the walls and the old town represent an extraordinary urban and architectural combination which offers a very impressive sight even from some distance. The original atmosphere of Gradara is well conserved in the imposing fortifications.

FRASASSI
The formation of the Frasassi caves began about 1.400.000 years ago when the Sentino river-bed was at an elevation of 200-300 mt higher than its present position, as well as the water table. At this level the ground mineralized water met the bicarbonate water of the river along the fault-planes and such a mixture gave origin to the first halls, creating this wonderful natural fairy-world that we can admire today.

GUBBIO
Laying on the slopes of Monte Ingino, Gubbio is one of the most ancient towns of Umbria, extremely well preserved during centuries and rich of monuments testifying its glorious past. Two important witnesses of the past are the Tavole Eugubine, one of most important documents referring to the ancient people called Italici and the Roman Theatre just outside the walls of the town. Dominated from the top by the Basilica on which the rests of St. Ubaldo are buried.

LORETO
Loreto (127 mlm, 10.500 inhab.) stands on a hill blanketed with cultivated fields extending onto the Musone and Potenza valleys. Loreto is the realization of a typical case of a Shrine generating a town. From the early 1300s a church dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto stood on the site of the present shrine. Even at that time the fame of the Sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Europe.

SAN LEO
Situated 35 kilometres from the sea, on the top of a sheer cliff above the undulating plain to the right of the Marecchia Valley.
The first inhabitants were the Sabellian tribes from Umbria, followed by the Gauls and the Romans. The ancient name of Montefeltro comes from the mass of rock ( Mons Feretri ) on which the town was built and where, according to tradition, there stood a temple dedicated to Jove Feretrius.

SAN MARINO
Nestled between Romagna and Marche just a few kilometres from the Adriatic riviera, the Republic of San Marino covers an area of only 61 sq km. It was founded in 301 A.D. by a Dalmatian stonecutter called Marinus who took refuge here – so the legend says – to escape the persecutions of the emperor Diocletian. Since then, the small country has boasted a history of freedom and independence, always defended with determination and wisdom against everyone.
